INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Logan Nelson scored twice and Anthony Collins provided the third period game winner as the Quad City Mallards (28-21-6) rallied with four unanswered goals to defeat the host Missouri Mavericks (20-28-5) 4-2 Saturday night.
After surrendering a pair of early shorthanded goals, the Mallards started their recovery with Justin Fox’s point blank 4-on-3 goal at 1:10 of the second period. Nelson tied the score at two by burying Todd Fiddler’s centering feed at 18:24 of the second.
Collins broke the deadlock at 7:05 of third period with a wrist shot from the top of the right wing circle. Nelson capped off the win by rifling his second of the night in under the crossbar from the left wing circle at 10:35 of the third.
The Mavericks had gotten off to a dream start when Jack Downing broke away to open the scoring at 2:56 of the first period and Lindsay Sparks charged into the slot alone to double the Missouri lead just a minute and 34 seconds later, but the Mavs would have little to cheer about the rest of the evening.
The Mallards return home to take on Missouri tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. Tickets to tomorrow’s game are available for just $5 for children 12 and under. After the game fans can join the Mallards on the ice for a postgame skate.
